There are many instances in the Bible where David literally sought the Lord’s guidance and the Lord also guided him in amazing ways. The sweet psalmist of Israel was the man after God’s own heart because he always sought God’s will and accordingly carried out God’s purposes (1 Sam 13:14, Acts 13:22). There are ten such instances which are listed below in a tabular form.
| Sr.No. | David’s Inquiry | Lord’s Reply | Bible Ref. (NIV) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | he inquired of the Lord, saying, “Shall I go and attack these Philistines?” | The Lord answered him, “Go, attack the Philistines and save Keilah.” | 1 Sam 23:2 |
| 2 | Once again David inquired of the Lord, | and the Lord answered him, “Go down to Keilah, for I am going to give the Philistines into your hand.” | 1 Sam 23:4 |
| 3 | David said, “Lord, God of Israel, your servant has heard definitely that Saul plans to come to Keilah and destroy the town on account of me. Will the citizens of Keilah surrender me to him? Will Saul come down, as your servant has heard? Lord, God of Israel, tell your servant.” | And the Lord said, “He will.” | 1 Sam 23:10,11 |
| 4 | Again David asked, “Will the citizens of Keilah surrender me and my men to Saul?” | And the Lord said, “They will.” | 1 Sam 23:12 |
| 5 | and David inquired of the Lord, “Shall I pursue this raiding party? Will I overtake them?” | “Pursue them,” he answered. “You will certainly overtake them and succeed in the rescue.” | 1 Sam 30:8 |
| 6 | In the course of time, David inquired of the Lord. “Shall I go up to one of the towns of Judah?” he asked. | The Lord said, “Go up.” | 2 Sam 2:1 |
| 7 | David asked, “Where shall I go?” | “To Hebron,” the Lord answered. | 2 Sam 2:1 |
| 8 | so David inquired of the Lord, “Shall I go and attack the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hands?” | The Lord answered him, “Go, for I will surely deliver the Philistines into your hands.” | 2 Sam 5:19 |
| 9 | so David inquired of the Lord, | and he answered, “Do not go straight up, but circle around behind them and attack them in front of the poplar trees. As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the poplar trees, move quickly, because that will mean the Lord has gone out in front of you to strike the Philistine army.” | 2 Sam 5:23,24 |
| 10 | During the reign of David, there was a famine for three successive years; so David sought the face of the Lord. | The Lord said, “It is on account of Saul and his blood-stained house; it is because he put the Gibeonites to death.” | 2 Sam 21:1 |
David sought God’s guidance and was obedient to the Lord’s counsel. So he was successful in his endeavors. Why this kind of guidance is rare in our spiritual life? The main reason for this is that we rarely seek Lord’s guidance in our day to day life. The Lord can guide your marriage, your job, your career, your finances, your education and every area of your life. But are you seeking His guidance? Do you really want to know and perform His will? One of the name of our Savior Jesus Christ as depicted by Isaiah is “Wonderful Counselor” (Isa 9:6). If you seek His divine guidance, He will surely guide you.
